MP3-Studio for Linux
(For updates/bug-fixes: see end
of page)
What is it?
MP3-Studio for Linux is an integrated enviroment
for playing and recording MP3-files. Here are some of it's features:
-
plays your favourite MP3-files in any order you like.
The player comes with an easy to use playlist-editor and has all the functionality
normally found on a CD-player.
-
rips audio-CD's. Supports many methods of ripping.
-
samples audio. The sampler can be programmed like
a VCR to allow audio recording at any time, so you don't even have to be
at home when you want to sample something
-
background wav to mp3 conversion. Encodes your wav
files into mp3-format, without degrading your system performance.
Below you can find a few samples of how it looks:
The MP3-Studio window
The MP3-Studio Player
How does it work?
The MP3-Studio is an application written in Tcl/Tk
and C. The Tcl/Tk part represents the user interface. The C part accesses
your soundcard. The actual encoding and decoding is done using the standard
MP3-utilities from the
Fraunhofer institute
in Germany. Please note that using our studio implies using the Fraunhofer
utilities, since
they are shareware you should register them.
What do I need?
In order to get the MP3-Studio to work, you will
need the following things:
-
Linux version 2.x or higher
-
The X-Windows system
-
The Open Sound System drivers for Linux
-
Tcl/Tk version 8.0 (note that due to the nature of
Tcl/Tk a higher, future version of Tcl/Tk might not work)
If you want a reasonable performance, please make
sure that your hardware meets at least the following specifications:
-
Pentium 133 or faster
-
16-bit little-endian stereo soundcard
-
CD-ROM player, if you want to use the CD-Ripper
-
lots of memory, we recommend at least 24 Megs
-
plenty of free diskspace for your music-collection
How do I get it?
Click the appropriate items below to download the
MP3-Studio.
Required:
The MP3-Studio
Fraunhofer MP3
utilities 2.72
Optional:
Tcl/Tk version 8.0 (part
1 & part 2) (download
this if you don't have Tcl/Tk installed on your system)
Linuxthreads
(download this if you don't have multithreading support on your system)
How do I install it?
First you have to install the optional parts, if
you require them. For more information on how to do this please
decompress these files and view the documentation
that comes along with it.
Decompress the MP3-Studio in a temporary directory
and use 'make' followed by 'make install' to automatically
install the product in /usr/local/mp3studio.
Finally decompress the Fraunhofer utilities into
the directory /usr/local/mp3studio or any other directory you like
that is in your path-settings.
Updates/Bugreport
After the release on the first of June we received
a number of bugreports and suggestions. We will try to fix a few problems
before July.
Currently the following bugs have been fixed (at
least we hope so):
-
'cdparanoia' missing after install -> added to section
BINFILES in Makefile
-
documentation screendumps missing -> added to mp3studio.tar.gz
and to section DOCFILES in Makefile
-
'l3enc' outdated -> replaced version 2.71 by version
2.72. Note that the encoder will still be outdated if you haven't registered
it. We are working to support version 3.
